After six years of thrilling Ugandans, the Club Silk-organised annual street bash in Industrial Area, has changed format. This year’s Street bash, dubbed ‘The Yello Street Jam @ Silk’ after official sponsors MTN Uganda, is looking to take the concept a step further. The previous five jams have been sponsored by Benson & Hedges, a brand of British American Tobacco (BAT). Other sponsors this year include Coca Cola and Nile Special.
The Yello Street Jam @ Silk’ will take place on Saturday April 10, (Easter Eve) both on an open area cordoned off in the street and inside Club Silk on 1st Street Industrial Area. Revellers will have to part with sh10,000 while those who want to access Club Silk and Silk Royale will folk out sh15,000 and Sh20,000 respectively. Gates open at 7:00pm and the show will go on until late.
Elvis Sekyanzi, the event coordinator and Club Silk director, says, “In the past, we have focused on mainly R&B, uptown-English artistes, like Michael Ross, Steve Jean and Chameleone. This year, we are bringing in pop artistes, who sing in local vernaculars. We want to move the focus of the bash away from the uptown audience and give it a wider appeal.” Performances by artistes are a major highlight at the street bash, which combines live performances and dancing by revellers. Joining the usual suspects from the popular vernacular singers lot are Mesach Semakula, Geoffrey Lutaaya and Sam & Sophie Gombya. Other artistes include The Obsessions, Ragga Dee, Chameleone, Julianna Kanyomozi, Steve Jean, Weasel, Small Axe, Steve Jean and Dorothy & Mosh. Joining this local lot will be Kenyan favourites, Red San and The Longombas. Dennis Mawanda, WBS TV’s Late Show host and Percy will be the show’s emcees, while the club’s Dee Jays, Junior, Lawrence, Alberto and Shiru will handle the music. Sekyanzi explained that organisers reached the decision to include the vernacular singers after appreciating their popular appeal. “I am a member of the organising committee of the Pearl Of Africa Music Awards and was involved in organising Ekiggunda Kyo Mwaka (a musical gala featuring local artistes that was organised to celebrate Radio Simba’s fifth anniversary at Nakivubo Stadium last year). I saw the respect and popularity these artistes command and knew we had to have them on the team,” he says.
Sekyanzi said the bash include a lot of ‘fun things’: “Anyone wearing yellow that night will stand a chance to win a gift from MTN Uganda.
