The principle town clerk and chief financial officer of Njeru town council in Jinja were on Wednesday charged with abuse of office and embezzlement of over sh319m.

This comes two months after the case was dismissed due to lack of prosecution witnesses.

The accused had pleaded not guilty to the offences.

The state re-opened the case early this month saying two witnesses were ready to testify against the accused.

They allegedly failed to account for the funds when asked to explain.
Jinja chief magistrate David Batema had ruled that the case would be heard on April 8.

Batema said the powers to grant bail were vested in the high court.

“I advise the accused to apply for bail from the high court. for now, you will be remanded at Kirinya Prison,” he said.
