ELEVEN suspected gunmen, among them two believed to have robbed tourists in the Queen Elizabeth National Park early in the year, have been arrested in a major security swoop in the park.

Four sub-machine guns and ammunition were recovered in the one-week crack-down by operatives of the Violent Crime Crack Unit (VCCU).
The operatives were dispatched to the park after an unspecified number of gangsters robbed a team of French and Italian tourists on January 14, making off with US$905 (sh1.8m), 400 Euros (sh940,000), sh480, three mobile phones and personal effects including passports.

Police spokesman Assuman Mugenyi, yesterday identified the two as John Kizza of Katunguki trading centre and Godfrey Banyezuki, a Special Police Constable attached to Kasuka Police post in Bunyaruguru.
“An SMG rifle, which they used in the robbery, was also recovered from them,” Mugenyi said.

In the same swoop, the VCCU arrested two employees of Mweya Safari Lodge in connection with feigning theft of sh4.4m and US$2100 (sh4.1m).
The two arrested were Jimmy Mawa and Hussein Mulindwa.
