THE MINISTRY of Education and sports, has given sh472m worth textbooks and teacher’s guides to primary schools in Mukono district, writes Joel Ogwang. Hajji Jumba Masagazi, the district vice-chairperson, while delivering the books to primary school headteachers at Bishop west Primary school, hailed government for delivering the assortments. However, he expressed his dismay at the failure of over 7,000 pupils in last year’s Primary Leaving Exams (PLE). He said the trend will not be tolerated starting this year. Masagazi added that although Mukono district was the third best district countrywide after Kampala and Wakiso districts in PLE, it is disheartening to know that almost half of the pupils failed. He added that even among the best pupils in the district, many of them came from schools in other districts. He said this was a serious challenge to parents in Mukono. Masagazi urged parents and headteachers to work together in order to achieve better results in future. He however cautioned them against selling off the books they had received. He added that any one caught stealing or selling schoolbooks will be sacked on the spot and taken to police.
Masagazi called upon parents to work closely with teachers for the betterment of their sons and daughters. He encouraged them to be strict and report anti-social activities their children engage in. He advised that parents should help their children through counselling them on many issues including career guidance.Ends
