DISTRICTS that share Lake Kyoga have elected a 10-member executive committee to enforce sustainable use of resources on the lake, reports Richard Otim. This is part of the newly-formed Lake Kyoga Integrated Management Organisation (LAKIMO), a body formed two years ago to regulate exploitation of resources on the lake. Members of the organisation comprise the districts of Kaberamaido, Kumi, Soroti, Kamuli, Pallisa, Masindi, Lira, Apac and Nakasongola. The districts meeting recently at Soroti Hotel elected Kamuli district chairperson, Charles Baligeya, as committee chairperson. Soroti chief administrative officer George Omuge was elected treasurer. Omuge said from the time LAKIMO came into force, a number of illegal practices on the lake including use of illegal fishing gear, had been minimised. “We have been able, through the organisation, to enforce sensible use of resources on the lake. We expect to get the best out of it in future,†he said. He said Soroti had, before the organisation came into force, lost over sh11m annually in revenue to illegal fishing on the lake. Ends
