UGANDA's renowned artists Jose Chameleone, Yvette Seguya, Bebe Cool and Jean Paul Samputu will travel to Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, next month to stage various musical shows at the invitation of the Honourary Consulate’s office of the Republic of Malawi to the Republic of Korea.
Kim Suk Young, the Korean investor in Uganda coordinating the visit made the announcement at a press conference he convened to announce winners of Kim’s African Song Competition that took place at Mandela National Stadium on December 20, last year. “I want to promote Ugandan young artists and their music to compete on the International World market. That is why I organised the competition last year for which I spent over sh150m,†he said.
“I have also established a recording studio, video and cassette tapes factory at Nalukolongo Industrial area and constructed Orange Theatre hall at Nalukolongo Trade Centre,†Kim added. Kim said the Malawi fully-sponsored trip for the Ugandan artistes is meant to expose them to the outside world and to perform along with renown South African singer Brenda Fassie and Malawi’s famous Gospel singer K. Banda.
“My company, Songdoh, will promote the artistes as long as they begin composing in International languages like English and French. They should borrow a leaf from the South African artistes like Brenda Fassie, Chaka Chaka and Lucky Dube who market their music worldwide because they sing in English,†Kim said.
Kim said for the 12 years he has lived and worked in Uganda, he has noted the plight of Ugandan artistes –– being among the poorest of the poor in Uganda, but that they have not despaired but persisted to promote themselves and market their compositions amidst rampant piracy.
Kim announced Yvette Seguya (Uganda) to be the best artist of the December competition, who will bag sh10m, J.P. Samputu (Rwanda) was the runner up and will get sh5m. In third place is Bebe Cool (Uganda) who will get sh3m, followed by Robert Simenya (Burundi) for sh2m. In fifth place are the Ogopa Djs (Kenya) who will bag sh1m, followed by Alex (Tanzania) sh0.5m.
