UGANDA Amateur Athletics Federation (UAAF) have set the foundation stone, but will need to keep the candle burning if they are to achieve their aim of getting athletes for sprints and field events from the north.
Despite the poor turn up of athletes at the second national trials — a weakness of the district sports officials to mobilise schools — upcoming talent was visible in the field and sprints at the 44-year old Acholi War Memorial stadium Pece.
Only two girls, Jennifer Acola (13.8) and Paska Okello, competed in the 100m.
Lilian Ajok made a one-woman’s show in the long jump (5.34m) yet these are the events that forced UAAF to take the trial in the north.
“Our athletes feared to race against the best in the country. They shied away when they heard the names coming,” explained one of the sports officials.
Athletes from other parts feared the insecurity though Kakira, Masindi, Makerere and UPDF made it to the national trial.
