SHE has worked as deputy headteacher and headteacher for 32 years. Time has come for her to retire from the service.
After serving in various schools, the former headmistress of Mengo Senior School, Sarah Kyazike Birungi is now Secretary of Education in Namirembe Diocese.
Mengo S.S. is among the government traditional schools offering comprehensive education.
On March 27, 2004, the school bid farewell to Birungi, who has been headmistress there for three years. Birungi has left a great impact in the school that people who come to Mengo seeking for vacancies refer to the current headteacher Patrick Bakamale as “madamâ€.
Edward Kiyemba, the treasurer of the school P.T.A, said Birungi had worked on various projects for the school which include buying a school bus, extension of the dining hall, fighting floods at the school football pitch, expansion of the school among others. However, the most important mark she has left in the school are the 2003 ‘O’ and ‘A’ level results that saw Mengo shine.
“The challenge left to the new head is to maintain the performance. Last year’s results were extremely good in the history of the school and this is a great challenge,†Kiyemba said.
Dr. Samuel Kiggundu who represented the Board of Governors said Birungi has been a very focussed teacher who has been sensitive to the needs and the requirements of the school. He hailed Birungi for her dedicated service to the school.
“By the time she came to Mengo, she knew she would be retiring but she delivered. She has devoted her time to the school, improved the computer facilities and financial management. She did not slow down despite the fact that she knew she would retire in March,†Kiggundu said.
Birungi said with God, everything is possible. She thanked God for having given her life, strength and ability to work.
Before heading Mengo S.S, Birungi was a teacher at Nabisunsa Girls School and later became a deputy headteacher at Kyambogo College. Bakamale hailed Birungi for the great work.
“Your impact is greatly entrenched in this school. Family spirit developed in the school. I found a staff that is worth retaining,†he said.
Bakamale said most people who come to the school referring to him as “dear madam †meaning that they were used to working with Birungi.
