The glasses will be given out at the door, and that might cause this otherwise kids’ movie draw in the crowds. Very few Ugandans have ever watched three dimensional (3D) film, or even video.
(With 3D, the signals from the screen are converted into left and right, just as the eyes do in real life to produce an image with depth.
In 3D, the use of the glasses means your eyes will see left and right, and your mind gives the impression of being in the ‘virtual world,’ rather than just watching the film. And, objects seem to come out of the screen.)
Critics have always railed against the use of 3D in films, and have also complained about this one, which starts in 2D and then you wear the glasses at some point. Ugandans will want to see how it works.
Carmen (Alex Vega) and Juni (Daryl Sabara) Cortez are sister and brother junior agents for the top secret OSS agency, and they step in frequently for their overworked parents Gregorio (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid (Carla Gugino) Cortez whenever national security is at stake.
Game Over is the third in the Spy Kids trilogy, and the plot takes place almost entirely in a giant video game, which the deranged mastermind Toymaker (Sylvester Stallone) has invented to try and take over the world.
The Toymaker, who also trapped in the game and his personality is divided into three (which means the Stallone has four different parts), wants every kid in the world to get addicted to it and thus enslave them.
Carmen is trapped inside the game, on level four, and although her body is still outside, her mind is inside the video. Juni, who has since retired from the OSS and become a private detective, has to enter the game and climb up all levels until he can save her within twelve hours. If he fails, it is Game Over, and that is a death sentence.
Juni’s main ally is his grandfather (Ricardo Montalban) who, although uses a wheelchair, is transformed into a virtual superman when he enters the game.
There are cameo appearances by Salma Hayek, Mike Judge, Cheech Marin, George Clooney and Elijah Wood. So, What kind of movie was it?
“When a filmmaker turns to 3-D as a film technique, it’s clear that a career path involving flipping burgers can’t be too far off. Clearly a case of Spy Kids Mr. Cranky. “More of a videogame film than a Spy Kids film,†The SF, Horror and Fantasy Film Review.
