MPs have vowed to push for a policy demanding that the Government purchases sanitary towels for girls to curb the high drop-out rate under the Universal Primary Education scheme

MPs have vowed to push for a policy demanding that the Government purchases sanitary towels for girls to curb the high drop-out rate under the Universal Primary Education scheme, reports Joyce Namutebi.

They want them supplied free of charge.
MPs on the social services committee were on Thursday briefing journalists about their visit to the West Nile sub-region from March 29 to April 2.
They learnt that the drop-out was due to child labour, early marriages and lack of sanitary facilities for girls during menstruation.
They said during menstruation, girls quit school and when they return it becomes difficult for them to cope.

They said if the Government failed to implement the policy after its passed by Parliament, they would use their powers under the Budget Act to reallocate funds to cater for the towels.
The MPs went to Adjumani, Yumbe, Arua and Nebbi districts to oversee the performance of the education sector.

The MPs decried the high drop-out rate particularly in upper classes.
“It is high time we addressed the issue of why children drop-out under UPE, particularly the girls,” said committee chairperson, Dorothy Hyuha .
