UGANDA Electricity Board (UEB) has completed rehabilitation of power stations in Kampala, Jinja, Tororo and Masindi at sh50b.

UEB’s managing director Grania Rubomboras said this while carrying out a final inspection of the sites in Apac and Masindi recently.

“The rehabilitation of these power stations is part of the Government’s policy to promote rural electrification. This is why we have installed a 33kv transformer from Masindi to Apac,” Rubomboras said.

The African Development Bank (ADB) funded project will be commissioned soon.

She said the major objective was to improve supply to Masindi and major road centres around Masindi like Kigumba Trading Centre, Kiryandongo Hospital, the National Agricultural Research Organisation’s farm in Kigumba and schools.

UEB’s projects coordination manager Paul Baringanire said, “We have installed a pylon to cross the river to ensure we do not obstruct the water way.”
He said the project would improve the quality and and reliability of power. A South African firm, ABB oversaw the project.

Baringanire said the areas would also be electrified enroute.

He said the project was covering 150km from Masindi to Apac up to Kungu Landing Site.

“I have participated in the design, procurement and supervision of the work. The major challenge to this project was river crossing which is about 800km wide,” Baringanire said.

“Before this project Masindi was being fed from Kampala and the voltages were as low as 26kv instead of the normal 33kv,” he said.

Baringanire said the project would tackle loss reduction because some areas had dim lights due to over loading of the network.
