ELEVEN heads of the richest faculties at Makerere University have rejected the University Council’s decision to slash their top up allowances by 26.4% to pay staff from poor departments.
In a recent meeting called by Dr. Hannington Ssengendo, the Dean Faculty of Arts, the deans and directors said the decision was unfair and inappropriate to the income-generating units.
“The decision of the University Council to deduct administrative/responsibility allowances without the consent of university staff members is illegal,” the deans said in a statement.
They questioned where the money remitted to the central administration went. “What do we get in return? Where does the money transferred to the central administration and other faculties go? Why is there a skewed grant allocation of research and projects’ grants for some disciplines?” they said.
The faculties control 90% of the student population. Up to 60% of the private students are on the evening programme, the biggest income earner for the faculties.
Recently, the Council passed a 30% increment mainly for senior administrative staff and lecturers to avert a strike.
