JUNIOR Kwebiiha will captain Uganda at the inaugural three-day International Cricket Council (ICC) intercontinental championship in Namibia.

All rounder Kwebiiha takes charge of his first competition, after standing in as captain after John Lubia left for the US last year.

A squad of 12 players and three officials leave for South Africa tomorrow for an acclimatisation tour enroute to Namibia on April 22, a day before competition starts in earnest.

Veteran national player Nehal Bibodi, U-19 heroes Patrick Ochan, Clive Kyangungu and Raymond Otim were not named on the squad.

Kenneth Kamyuka who returned from South Africa on Saturday after a five-week semi-professional stint with Johannesburg based side Lenesia CC, will join the team today.

In South Africa, Uganda will have a friendly one-day tie against Lenesia CC and two, two-day games against Soweto Select XI before travelling to Windhoek.

The ICC intercontinental Cup, to be competed in a three-day version, has been designed to give the associate members greater exposure to the longer format of the game following their good performance at the 2003 World Cup.

Twelve of the leading associate member countries from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe will participate in separate competitions in the next seven months.

A top team from each continent will progress to the semi-final and final, which will be held in Sharjah in November.
