TWO losers in the Makerere University’s guild elections have lodged petitions challenging the election results declared on Tuesday.
Samuel Opio Acuti and Donald Waigumburizi allege that the nullification of results from Livingstone Hall and declaration of Ronald Mukasa as a winner by the electoral commission was a blatant violation of the basic right to vote as enshrined in clause 1 of Article 59 of the Constitution.

The Dean of Students, John Ekudu, said an election tribunal would look into all the election complaints.
“By the end of today the tribunal will be in place to look into these problems. So far I have received a petition from some one on behalf of Samuel Opio, and I think others are coming,” he said.
Yesterday students in Livingstone Hall were angered by the results they gathered in gardens and plotted to attack the electoral commission.

“I have not yet received any petition yet and if there is any, it must come before three days elapse,” Julius Ojok, the guild electoral commission chairperson, said.
The Guild Constitution provides for a petition tribunal consisting of the financial advisor, the speaker, legal advisor, two chaplains or mulla and one hall chairperson appointed by the University Council to hear poll complaints.
