Three years, 15 regional finals, six towns, 45 regional qualifiers, 72 finalists, and finally three beauty queens.

The Miss Uganda beauty pageant has come a long way in the past three years, but this weekend there are going to do it all over again.

On Saturday, Fort Portal will be the place to be as the first regional finals of the 2004 contest take off. It is a bit of deviation from tradition, as the Northern regional finals are the first to take place, and they have done so for the last three years in Lira. Unfortunately, Lira will have to miss out this time.

“One difference with the Miss Uganda pageant over the last three years is that we have tried to make it really national, and that is why we usually cover all the regions of the country,” Miss Uganda spokesperson Jessica Kyeyune said recently.

“Unfortunately, we have not been able to go to Lira this year, and we regret it. Conditions are not inductive, and the people there have just suffered some major tragedies, we feel it would not be appropriate for the party that the Miss Uganda is to take place among people who are still mourning their loved ones. But we feel for them, and hopefully by next year we shall be able to return.”

Kyeyune said the girls who would have participated in the northern regional finals are free to join any of the regional finals, or even the final pre-selections in Kampala.

This year’s western regional finals will be in Fort Portal for the second year running. They will take place at the Ataco Country Resort, 10 kilometers on the Kasese Road.

Last year’s show held at the Gardens Restaurant almost became a riot when management refused to fully open the gates, claiming that people will make off with empty bottles.
