A new concessionaire is scheduled to manage Uganda and Kenya railways from August 2005 for 25 years.

A committee composed of officials from Uganda and Kenya is handling the selection of the concessionaire.

Kenya’s permanent secretary in the transport ministry Gerrishon Ikiara has said.

Ikiara (right) said this during a Kenyan delegation visit to Uganda Railways Corporation this week.

He said the search for the concessionaire is international.

“The operator we want should be experienced and financially viable and would improve the state of the track and rolling stock.

He/she would manage companies, which would have separate sub-boards for each country under it. Locals would have 40% shareholding,” Ikiara said.
