JAMES Sianga’s ten-man herd catapulted in the last eight minutes as they bowed out of this year’s Confederations Cup in a 3-0 demolition by Nigerian side Lobi Stars yesterday.
Express needed victory to progress to the next round but an early red card to Robert Kabanda and the loss of key player Juma Kaka to injury further weakened the case of Uganda’s only continental representatives.
Sianga’s stark warning beforehand that his team were not very good at playing the containing game suggested they would be vulnerable to a spirited Lobi Stars’ performance and that came to reality in the last quarter of the game.
The Nigerians, whom Express had comprehensively outplayed in the first meeting a fortnight ago, looked the more assured team and it was no surprise when they took the lead through Patrick Elerango after 78 minutes, from a corner Express custodian Samuel Kakwaya should have dealt with comfortably.
The second came slightly later and yet again from Elerango, who had a good view of an in swinging corner that Kakwaya could not prevent from ripping into the corner of the net.
Express never looked like recovering the body blow of falling behind and to make matters worse they were torn apart for what proved a clinching third Lobi Star’s goal two minutes from time.
Express join SC Villa in the continental graveyard.
Meanwhile in Kigali, CECAFA champions SC Villa kick-started their regional title defence with a pitiful 1-1 draw against Rwandan side Kiyovu FC in the Amahoro stadium.
Simeon Masaba snatched Villa’s equaliser at the death.
Express line up:
Samuel Kakwaya, Juma Kaka, Robert Kabanda, Edward Ssali, Israel Emuge, Abed Bironse, Godfrey Ssali, Waswa Bbosa, Baby Matiyabu (Mark Mwambo), Hassan Mubiru and Peter Rwebuga.
