NATIONAL Housing and Construction Corporation (NH&CC) is looking for an additional $4m to construct a modern parking yard at the Crested Towers, sources close to the project said.
The cost of the three-year renovation project has now nearly doubled to $20m from the initial projection of $10.6m.
This is due to addition of new air-conditioning, communication systems and other facilities.
“The kind of parking which NH&CC wants to build to suit the refurbished Crested Towers will cost between $3m and $4m,” said a source.
The source said the corporation had already contracted a local firm which drew the architectural plans for the proposed modern parking tower.
Sources said NH&CC was talking to bankers and other institutions over the possibility of securing the funds.
Efforts to reach the acting general manager, Aloysius Lubowa, were futile.
But on Monday (last week), Michael Opagi, the head of the Privatisation Unit, said the corporation has to get the line ministry’s approval if it wants to carry out any development or borrow money.
NH&CC which is pending privatisation is under the finance ministry.
Sources said according to the plan, the parking lot will comprise a six-floor tower.
“Once constructed, the modern parking tower would be the first of its kind in Uganda,” said the source.
“Such a parking tower should have good security, lighting and fire fighting system. It has to be well-roofed,” said the source.
The refurbishment of Crested Towers has cost NH&CC over $20m.
In August 2000, Roko was contracted to renovate the 20-floor tower and the 11-floor tower.
“The Roko contract did not include putting up a parking yard. They were supposed to renovate the building, fix new lifts and other facilities,” said the source.
