The deputy resident district commissioner of Gulu, 2nd Lt. James Oyo, has asked Jinja Catholic Diocese to condemn the act of Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.
“How can they call themselves LRA when they are killing innocent people? I want you to condemn the act of Kony and his fighters,” he said.
Oyo said this while meeting 25 priests from the diocese on Tuesday.
“You are the people who command respect from the community so you should come out and persuade Kony to accept dialogue with the Government,” he added.
The team leader, who is the diocesan pastoral coordinator, Fr. Patrick Mubiru, said they had come to show solidarity with the suffering Acholi people.
“We have come to see with our own eyes and now we can sense the pains in your hearts. We have seen children without legs, maimed, and those with their lips cut and those with serious wounds,” Fr Simon Peter Kyambadde said.
The team also visited Gulu Support the Children Organisation, Awer and Pagak internally displaced people’s camps in Kilak county.
The priests said their visit to the war-ravaged region would create awareness about the people’s suffering.
