Take care, the loo can be treacherous indeed

Musoke rushed to the latrine and when he pulled his trousers down, something dropped into the pit. His money purse, containing over $2000, had vanished!
As he bent to see what he had lost, out flew his identity card, ATM card and other documents from his shirt pocket and followed the purse!
Many people have lost valuables in such a manner. Such items include mobile phones, keys, passports and many others. Most of the time it is items stuffed in the back pocket of trousers which are always lost.
This is because when trousers are pulled down, the pockets face down and are likely to empty all their contents into the pit.
Phones clipped on waist belts too have a tendency of unclipping and going down the hole. This equally applies to radio calls and walkie-talkies, which are usually clipped on the trouser belt.
Soldiers, police officers and other people in the armed forces have lost their pistols. Immediately the belt is unbuckled, the pistol slips through the trousers directly into the pit. Many people have suffered different ordeals in this way.
One Abdul tells of a story where he had gone to visit his parents in Buginyanya, Mbale. Upon squatting over the pit, he heard noise of falling metallic items on the floor.
His effort to grab them, in a panic, just pushed them down the pit. It was the keys of his Toyota RAV 4!
The family he had driven to the village was stranded. He had to travel back to Kampala to get a spare key, and he could only make it back to Mbale the next day. It is not only the pit latrine that is capable of swallowing people’s valuables.
The modern flush toilets have caused equal havoc. It does not matter whether one sits or squats on the pan. Because the toilets use water, electronic items such as pagers, radio calls and mobile phones fall into the toilet bowls, never to work again. Documents such as identity cards and passports have also got soaked, never to be the same again!
It is therefore important that as you go to answer nature’s call, you ensure the safety of the items you are carrying.
You could either leave them somewhere else, or while inside the toilet, first remove them and place them on the window, floor, or on the cistern.
There is one risk in this though. It is very easy to forget your items there after you have finished your business. So, the next time you go to the toilet, take care of your valuables or you might lose them forever.
