RIO Insurance Company limited yesterday salvaged Uganda’s Africa senior and junior weightlifters team with sh7.6m sponsorship in four air tickets and 30 T-shirts.
Assistant general manager Rio Insurance John Matovu handed over the package to Uganda Weightlifting Federation (UWF) general secretary Salim Musoke at a press conference at Lugogo clubhouse.
The offer ended fears that UWF would only send two lifters facilitated by the ministry of sports to the competition which doubles as an Athens 2004 Olympic qualifiers.
Musoke, who could not hide his delight with the offer, urged the lifters to go and win medals, which will be dedicated to the company in appreciation.
“The air tickets are here I want you to go and come back with at least 4 medals also. We shall call them ‘Rio’ medals because of the support they (Rio Insurance) has offered us,” Musoke said.
The weightlifters fly out to Tunisia at 3:55pm aboard Emirates Air today ahead of the one-week competitions that kick off tomorrow.
“We would like to grow with sports and when the weightlifters federation contacted us, we felt it was good association for us. May be next time we shall offer more,” Matovu said. UWF confirmed a contingent of six lifters and an official are going for the trip.
Other sponsors of the team are Property Masters, Scandinavian Express and Embassy Supermarket.
The list of the confirmed include:
Ismail Katamba 56kg
Moses Kimbowa capt. 62kg
Noah Suubi 69kg
Irene Ajambo 69kg
Mariam Nalubanga 75kg
Godfrey Baligeya 85kg
Ali Kavuma coach
