DPP pardons Karimojong

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has withdrawn court proceedings against 14 suspected Karimajong warriors charged with a September 2001 murder of 14 people at Ngariam internally displaced persons’ (IDP) camp in Katakwi district.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has withdrawn court proceedings against 14 suspected Karimajong warriors charged with a September 2001 murder of 14 people at Ngariam internally displaced persons’ (IDP) camp in Katakwi district.

He discontinued the proceedings during a special High Court session presided over by the Mbale resident Judge, Rugadya Atwooki, in Soroti recently.

The session that opened on April 19 was to try the Karimajong who were on remand since September 2001.

Five of the suspects had, however, died in custody.

They were identified as Opel Loru, Angolere Lokoro, Peter Logwal, Peter Lotekenyi and Loum Ayom.

Prosecution alleged that the accused on September 13, 2001 attacked Ngariam IDP camp and killed 14 people.

It is further alleged that they robbed 500 head of cattle during the attack.

Those who were set free after the withdrawal of the proceedings included Teko Lokiru, Jacob Lokori, James Lonoron, Paul Otol, Paul Lorika, Raphael Locoto, Sadrack Moru, and Max Sagal. Pius Lele, John Loduk, Moses Logel, Loduk Yeleyele and Paul Lokiru.
