A TWENTY-one-year-old student in senior six vacation was crowned Miss Northern Region in a colourful ceremony presided over by Gulu district chairperson Lt. Col. Walter Ochora at Acholi Inn on Friday.
Lillian Aya beat 14 other contestants to the crown, despite a heavy downpour that disrupted the show for over four hours.
It was the first time Gulu district was hosting the show and the turn up was good.
“I am so excited to be crowned Miss Northern. I did not hope to win but I was surprised. I came with the intention of adventuring but managed to be crowned Miss Northern,†she said.
Aya (above) said she would act as a role model and lobby for funds to help vulnerable children and youth in the camp.
She advised the youth to either abstain from sex or use condoms.
Esther Atieno, 21, a diploma holder in marketing was first runner-up while Finela Aciro came second runner-up.
“I thank God because I had no imagination that I would be among the best in the north. I will now focus on the Miss Uganda crown,†Atieno said.
Ochora advised the winners to be proud of their beauty.
Lucia Adikinyi, the organiser of the contest, said the girls were intelligent and confident.
Celtel co-sponsored the event.
