I first made the aquaintence of Rosie Stockley around 1994. She was a nurse at Lincoln International School while I was handling the catering for the school. She was always meticulous and a stickler for detail and cleanliness. So it came as no surprise when she decided, to open up what can truly be called the quintessential Tea House, and personally be involved with all the day to day activities of the place. Small enough to give that ‘homely- like’ feeling that is so often lacking in these enterprises, and yet a viable set up. The place is quaint, charming and has a very pleasant environment.
One of the favourites of many is the so called ‘traditional cream tea’. This is a choice of tea or coffee with scones, cream and strawberry or mulberry jam.
However, I hasten to add that the choice of tea is limited to Ugandan tea for the logical reason that other teas such as twining, earl grey or oolong (a semi-fermented leaf that is in a class of its own) to wit, are rather dear.
Nevertheless, I am certain that one could have a choice of the latter and pay the difference. Otherwise, this combination would set you back a modest sh4,000. While still on tea there is also the South African Rooibos. One that I am not familiar with but I am told is a wonderful tea with an enticing flavour. When it comes to the herbal tea there is a decent variety from which to select. Over to coffee Ugandan and Kenyan from which to choose with a single cafetiere of the former costing sh2,000 and sh1,000 more for the latter. The coffee extravaganza is a mug of coffee topped with whipped cream or marshmallow dusted with cocoa or cinnamon and has been described to me as being delightful.
One of the outstanding features of this Tea House is the truly home made cakes and bakes. These vary from day to day. Tuesday for instance, there was an American apple cake that looked extremely appetizing. When was the last time you partook of a date slice or ginger biscuits with a dreamy flavour that reminds you of the way your mother used to bake them?
As for something more savoury, the day I was there I had a slice of a baguette served with some ham, salami, cheese butter tomatoes and onions and a dressing. The choices are limited in terms of sandwiches, and rightly so, with the e-mphasis being on tea, cakes and bakes.
It would be wonderful if Rosie could serve English muffins and who would not die for bagels and lox!
The service is attentive and the standards impeccable.
