JINJA municipal council in conjunction with the Madhvani group of companies has established a bursary scheme to help less privileged children acquire education, writes Charles Kakamwa.
Mayor David Wakudumira launched the Jinja Municipal Council/Madhvani Bursary Scheme with a sh20m cheque for 19 children, at the Town Hall on Tuesday.
Kakira Sugar Works managing director Mayur Madhvani attended the function.
Wakudumira said the big number of disadvantaged people in Jinja prompted leaders to initiate the bursary.
“In order to win the war against poverty, people must get education. We realised that a great number could not afford it, so we started this scheme,” he said.
Madhvani asked the bursary scheme committee to be impartial and select only the needy children.
