PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has directed that the late Francis Ayume be accorded a state funeral, information minister Nsaba Buturo said yesterday.
Buturo quoted the President as saying he found Ayume “one of the finest public officials the country has ever had.”

The President said the Movement and the country had lost “one of the most hardworking public servants.”
Vice-President Gilbert Bukenya said he was “saddened by the news” of Ayume’s death. He said he had worked with him on some government matters, in particular on the roadmap to 2006.

Buturo said a Cabinet committee headed by third deputy Prime Minister Henry Kajura was set up yesterday to coordinate funeral arrangements.
Ministers Kirunda Kivejinja, Bakoko Bakoru, Mwesigwa Rukutana, Betty Aketch, Agardi Didi, Andruale Awuzu and Nsaba Buturo are committee members.

At the time of the accident, Ayume’s wife was in the United States visiting one of their sons while their daughter was in the United Kingdom.
The body will lie in state at Parliament on Thursday where it will spend the night. It will be taken to Namirembe Cathedral on Friday for a service after which it will be flown to Arua town. The burial is on Sunday in Koboko.

Former minister Anthony Butele who was in Ayume’s car survived with injuries.
