LOCAL government minister Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere has said rampant corruption and lack of accountability were undermining the implementation of the decentralisation programme.
Speaking at a sensitisation workshop at Kook Hall in Kapchorwa district recently, Kabwegyere asked the district to account for sh20b in government grants over the past three financial years.
“We must know what this money has been used for, how much has been achieved. If there have been any losses, what must we do to stop such losses from occurring again,” he said.
Kabwegyere said the Government had released sh20.5b as grants to the district in 2000-03.
He told the over 300 participants that local councillors and Members of Parliament (MPs) should monitor the accountability of funds and implementation of government projects and services in their areas.
MPs Dr. Steven Chebrot (Tingey), Dr. John Yekko (Kween), Gertrude Lulany (Women) and RDC Joseph Arwata attended.
