State minister for communication Michael Werikhe and Mbale Woman MP Oliver Wonekha have denied allegations that they campaigned against Mbale Municipality MP-elect Silvester Wanjusi Wasieba (right).

Werikhe and Wonekha told a Lumasaba programme “Power belongs to the people” on Radio Uganda on Friday that Mbale residents had accused them of not supporting Wasieba in the by-election.

“We did not agree anywhere as MPs of Mbale and Sironko districts that we should support or not support Wasieba.

“We knew it was the people themselves who had the power to decide on who to represent them in Parliament,” Werikhe said.

Mbale and Sironko MPs were conspicuously silent about the candidate they were backing.

However, Mbale LC5 chairman Benard Mujasi repeatedly said he supported Wasieba.

Mujasi said it was wrong for leaders not to show sides in contentious political issues.

“Leaders who do not show sides are not straight forward. They only deceive voters,” he said.

Mujasi on several times said it was wrong for leaders not to show their sides during contentious political issues.

Warikhe and Wonekha said they were also happy with the election of Wasiaba as an MP for Mbale municipality.

“I will personally be part of the team to escort him for the swearing ceremony,” said Werikhe.

In The Monitor of Wednesday, page one, Wsiaba was quoted as saying he had forgiven some of the Mbale MPs who never supported him.
