MAKERERE University deputy dean of students, Cosmas Omara, said that many hostel owners have resorted to “selling off” female students who sleep in their hostels to prospective buyers through the services attached to hostels like bars and restaurants.

He said this was responsible for the increasing cases of unwanted pregnancies among university students.

Omara said the situation has been worsened by the hostels lack of counseling services. He was recently addressing student trainers and trainees at the university. He says such hostel surroundings have created conditions that have left many students pregnant and many times infected with different sexually transmitted diseases and later one drops out of school.
