Masaka High Court has sentenced a man to one month in jail for defilement and elopement.

Abbas Kasozi Nsubuga, 24, of Kigamba in Masaka Municipality was convicted after his lawyer, Mathias Ssendegeya, said his client wished to plead guilty to the offence.

Prosecution led by the residents State Attorney, Sarah Okarany, incriminated Kasozi for defiling a 16-year-old pupil in November 2000.
Kasozi, who had eloped with the girl to Gayaza, was arrested a year later, after her parents reported the matter to the Police.
A subsequent medical examination proved the victim was eight-and-a-half month pregnant.

She later delivered a baby girl.
Kasozi pleaded for lenience, saying he needed to go back and maintain his baby and its mother.
In his ruling on Tuesday, Justice Kibuuka Musoke sentenced him to 30 days in jail, considering that he had been on remand for three years.
