UGANDA has been elected to chair the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) for two years, reports Charles Ariko.
Uganda’s turn to chair the NBI was approved by the 12th Nile Basin Council of Ministers in Nairobi recently.

Patrick Kahangire, a long-time serving director for water development in the water ministry, was approved and assumed office as NBI executive director at the Entebbe-based secretariat on Wednesday.

A technocrat with three decades of experience in the water sector, Kahangire replaces Meraji Msuya of Tanzania, who has been the executive director since NBI’s inception in February 1999.

Addressing a press conference at the NBI secretariat on Friday, Kahangire commended Msuya for his contribution in establishing the secretariat.

NBI comprised the 10 River Nile riparian states of Burundi, DR Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Sudan.

It is a partnership aimed at fighting poverty and promoting socio-economic development, among other regional issues.
