Kasese district council has questioned the Ministry of Education and Sports’s criteria for determining private schools which qualify for government aid.
During a recent social services committee meeting, councillors cried foul over the inclusion of Mt. Rwenzori S. S. on the list to the exclusion of others.
“The school is a private institution. It belongs to Mrs. Loice Bwambale. It operates in rented buildings. It has no land. It has only 100 students and parents have shunned it,” the councillors said in a resolution.
The school, located in Kilembe sub-county, belongs to MP Loice Bwambale (Busongora South).
The meeting chaired by J. Baguma (Kitswamba sub-county), asked the ministry to clarify on the criteria used in selecting the schools.
“The Minister for Education and Sports should educate us and the entire population of Kasese about this mistake,” the councillors said, adding that there were other schools which met the criteria.
Kuruhe S. S. and Kisinga Vocational Institute were the other two schools taken on by the Government.
The district inspector of schools, Joshua Mupanda, said Hamukungu Lake Katwe, Nyakiyumbu, Maliba had been among those recommended to benefit from government help.
Mupanda said the schools had examination centres, were quite remote and disadvantaged and/or had over 300 students each.
The CAO, Giles Kahika, attended.
