BUSOGA sub-region has the highest number of victims of child abuse reported to the Police, a 2003 child abuse report states.
The report shows that Kampala district recorded the highest victims of child abuse at 16.3%, followed by Jinja with 5.7%, Iganga with 3.3% and Kamuli with 3.2%. Other districts were Mukono with 4.9%, Mbale with 4.4% and Lira with 3%.
Addressing a press conference at the launch of the child abuse awareness week, Samuel Kaali, the chairman of the African Network for Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPCANN) recently said defilement was the most common form of child abuse.
“We must investigate the socio-economic factors in Busoga region and how these predispose children to abuse,” Kaali said.
He said the report indicated that the Police handled over 3,000 more cases in 2003 compared to 2002 and 83.6% involved females compared to 16.4% male,” he said.
Kaali said the struggle to protect Uganda’s children was still challenged by the existence of civil war.
