MYCOLEX College punched their way to a total 17 points and the lead in the national schools boxing championship quarterfinals yesterday.
Defending champions Citizen College were relegated to second place a point behind the leaders. Kampala High and Concerted College A were joint third with 10 points in the event at Lugogo.
Meanwhile, bantamweight Atanus Mugerwa returns to the ring at the AIBA ranking King’s Cup boxing championship next week.
The hard-punching Mugerwa, who was robbed of a chance of qualifying for the Athens Olympic by an injury, secured a place after outclassing Edirisa Mayanja during trials on Tuesday.
Mugerwa is a boost to the national team handled by assistant national coach Kent Musa.
The team is without five senior boxers who are in Kabale training for the Athens Olympics. Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania are expected tomorrow.
