THE UPDF forces in Southern Sudan yesterday killed 32 LRA rebels during a combined force of air and ground troops.

The northern-based Army spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said yesterday that the rebels under the command of LRA brigade commandeer Col. Charles Odhiambo were hit by the UPDF helicopter gunship and the infantry battalion in Langiro, Lowi and Okara on the Juba-Nisito road.

“LRA commander Odhiambo fled with some of his fighters who survived the air raid and dropped many looted food items that our forces recovered,” the army spokesman said.

Ankunda added that their forces in Southern Sudan under the Command of Lt. Col. Sam Kiwanuka rescued 20 captives from the fleeing rebels.

He said the UPDF was not giving the rebels time to rest and regroup.
Ankunda added that they recovered one mortar gun, one rifle, one anti-personnel mine and 13 bullet magazines.

Recently, the Army Commander, Lt. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, said they would not give rebels time to eat and plan attacks on the IDP camps.
He said they had got better equipment to end the war in the north.

Meanwhile, the rebels last evening ambushed a pick-up truck moving from Lukung to Kitgum town at about 4:00pm and killed one person and injured two others.
But Akunda said the security situation was not as bad as some politicians portray it.

“We are doing all we can to ensure that the LRA are no more soon,” he said.

He added that people should get annoyed with the rebels and express it physically so that the LRA do not have any ground to stand on.

He said the battle in southern Sudan against Odhiambo’s LRA units was successful, with no casualties on the UPDF side.
