Enviromentalists have said Kampala will soon lose its greenery due to the cutting down of trees. They decried investments, which do not respect areas set aside to sink waste. They cited the mango trees at Lugogo, which were cut to build a supermarket.

New NGO to save wetlands
A new environmental NGO, Clear Environmental Frontier, has been formed to spearhead the protection of wetlands in Kampala City. Nakivubo, Kasanga and Kinawataka swamps are under threat from investors.

IUCN invites scribe’s entries
The World Conservation Union (IUCN) and Reuters are inviting entries for this year’s Reuters-IUCN Media Award for Excellence in environmental reporting, open to the print and online journalists worldwide. Submission deadline for entries at IUCN offices is on August 15.
