THE commissioner for primary education in the Ministry of Education, Sam Onek, has said more than 50,000 pupils registered under the Universal Primary Education programme in Lango and Acholi have quit school.

Speaking during a workshop at Lira Hotel recently, Onek said many girls dropped out of school in 2003.

He said over 12,000 pupils dropped out of schools in Lira district, over 11,000 in Apac, about 10,000 in Gulu, over 5,170 in Kitgum and about 8,600 in Pader district.

Onek said the majority of pupils who drop out of school come from the northern region.

He said it was partly because of the rebel activities in the area that the development of education had been hampered.

Onek also blamed parents for not guiding and counselling their children about the importance of education.

He said some parents forced their children into marriage to get wealth.
