About 30 Ugandan casual labourers deported from Rwanda for lack of valid travel documents are crying foul, saying they lost their property during the deportation process.

The immigrants, most of whom were working with ROKO, a construction company in Kigali, Rwanda, were handed over to Ugandan authorities at Katuna border in Kabale on Monday.

Kabale district Police commander Martin Amoru said, “We agreed with the Rwandan government to clean up and deport illegal immigrants. Some of our people have been staying in Rwanda without valid documents. We shall also deport Rwandese living in Uganda without valid papers.”

He did not, however, say whether they had found any Rwandese staying here illegally.

“We were hurriedly deported from Rwanda and as a result we have lost our property. We are not sure of job security in case we process our papers,” a victim said.

Kabale resident district commissioner Lt. James Mwesigye (left) denied allegations that the victims were deported due to sour government relationships, saying they had agreed diplomatically.
