THE Government has started a special education programme to enable students living in internally displaced persons’ (IDP) camps in Teso and the northern region access free secondary school education.

The state minister for disaster preparedness, Christine Amongin Aporu, said the offer came following appeals from parents living in camps about the difficulties that hinder their children from accessing secondary education.

“The people living in camps appealed to us to address the issue of education as most of their children were unable to access secondary education,” she said.

Addressing the press at her office in Kampala on Friday, Amongin said the Government recognised the need for children living in IDP camps to access secondary education saying this would be the only way to develop their society, besides becoming important citizens in the country.

She said the education ministry had been charged with the duty of ensuring that children living in camps access secondary education.

Amongin said registration of children to attain free secondary education had begun in camps in Apac district, adding that it would soon spread to other war-torn areas.
