The Uganda National Bureau of Standards executive director, Dr. Terry Kahuma (right), has said the only way Uganda can achieve maximum export drive is through observance of quality standards.

“We need to relate safety and reliability to quality. without these, Uganda will not penetrate the protected and complicated markets of the world,” he said.

Kahuma was speaking during the certification of seven local firms at Hotel Africana recently.

The firms, which included Saimco Ltd, Steel Rolling Mills Ltd, Kengrow Ltd, Sugar Corporation of Uganda Ltd, Dairy Corporation, Casements Africa Ltd and Teclab, were certified by Nemko Certification AS after undergoing an eight month training and evaluation.

Abid Alam, the Uganda Manufacturers Association chairman, said firms should not compromise quality since Uganda was getting involved in the East African Customs Union.
