THUNDERBIRDS’ fairy tale in women rugby continued on Sunday here when they lifted the Tusker Safari sevens title without losing a match on the final day that also saw Kampala schools combined take the bowl crown.

THUNDERBIRDS’ fairy tale in women rugby continued on Sunday here when they lifted the Tusker Safari sevens title without losing a match on the final day that also saw Kampala schools combined take the bowl crown.
The women's event was included in the nine-year-old tournament for the first time and to Thunderbirds – their victory, and more so in their maiden participation – was a testimony of hard-work and determination.
“I dedicate our emphatic victory to the people of Uganda who have supported us in our pursuit for better. I also dedicate it to my knee which I sacrificed to play despite doctors instructions to the contrary,†an elated team captain Hellen Buteme said after their decisive match against Nairobi's Kamukunji.
Earlier, Kenya retained the sevens title on Sunday when they beat South Africa's Emerging Springboks 10-7 in the final at the Rugby football union of East Africa ground.
Kenya had beaten Uganda 17-5 in the quarter finals and Invetec Western Province of South Africa 26-12 in the semis.
Meanwhile, two players were dropped as the Uganda national team headed to Lusaka, Zambia ready to give their best shot in the World Cup qualifier starting Saturday.
Moses Soita, who was making his debut in the sevens and O'Brien Tindimweba returned home after featuring in the Tusker Safari Sevens where Uganda fell in the semi finals of the plate to Zimbabwe on Sunday on here.
Surprise inclusion was John Musoke, who missed three opening matches at the Safari Sevens.
Michael Wandera will captain the team in Lusaka. Other players are Peter Magona, Anthony Kinene, Robert Seguya, Ronnie Lutakome, Allan Musoke, Mark Olweny, Edmond Tumusiime and Bony Morrow.
The officials making include Umah Tete (manager), Obaldo Bakahembo (doctor) and Wafula.
