VETERAN UTV newsreader Bbale Francis has been committed to Luzira Prison for failure to pay a sh1.5m debt.

Sources yesterday said Bbale was taken to Luzira’s Murchison Bay Prison on Friday afternoon.

Mary Kaddu, the Prisons public relations officer, yesterday said, “Bbale said he had been paying the money for the last three months but was recently overwhelmed by other commitments, which included paying school fees for his children.

When he failed to raise the money, his debtors decided to bring him to Luzira Prison.”

Bbale stood surety for someone who borrowed sh4.5m from Rev. Father Sebuliba. The unidentified person vanished before paying the money.

He is to serve a six-month jail term if he does not pay the balance of sh1,530,125.

His debtors reportedly paid his daily upkeep fees for the jail term. Prison authorities charge sh2,000 per day for keeping a civil prisoner.
