By Nathan Etengu Bugiri district is investigating alleged harassment of Kenyan fishermen on the Uganda side of Lake Victoria. “We have received information that the maritime unit were using cadre Godfrey Osebeto to harass the Kenyan fishermen,†deputy resident district commissioner Isaac Lulaba said recently. He said the Kenyans accused the unit of confiscating their catch and forcing them to sell it to Ugandans at give-away prices. “The information we have received is that he (Osebeto) is a big problem to the Kenyan fishermen. He wields a lot of authority in the islands,†Lulaba said. He said the incident reportedly occurred on Remba Islands, adding that piracy cases had also been cited on Dolwe, Hama and Sigulu Islands. Lulaba said the Kenyan district commissioner of Suba, Joseph Imbwaga and Maremba Beach (Kenya) management committee chairperson, Osogo lodged the complaints. Lulaba said they re-deploy security personnel on Sigulu Island and that he would tour the island to sensitise residents on good neighbourliness. A Kenya High Commission source said the unit was charging Kenyan fishermen sh300,000 per month.Ends
