THE Army captured one Lord’s Resistance Army rebel commander and four other fighters during an operation at Kilak hills, about 45km west of Gulu town on Saturday.

Army spokesperson Lt. Paddy Ankunda identified the commander as Lt. Michael Omon, who was captured when an Army helicopter attacked their position at Arebe hills.

Omon, who had earlier been shot in his right leg at Maaji refugee camp in Adjumani district, was reportedly being carried on a stretcher at the time of the attack.

His caretakers had abandoned him when the helicopter gunship raided the area and killed 10 rebels.

Omon was later flown to the 4th Division Gulu barracks, where he is being treated.

He said he was abducted in 1994 at Paloda in Palabek-kal in Kitgum district.

“We were with Lt. Gen. Vincent Otti (above) when the UPDF helicopter shelled our position. He fled with other fighters immediately but I could not flee because I was injured. I had a gun without bullets,” Omon said.

He said he was taken to Sudan for military training before he was deployed under the command of Otti.
