The acting Nebbi district director for health services, Dr Anthony Andrionzi, has hailed the civil society for reducing discrimination against persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Speaking at the hand-over of bicycles to community-based rehabilitation workers in Nebbi town on Monday, Andrionzi said the decline was due to mass sensitisation programmes conducted by the district and support organisations.
The bicycles were donated by Doctors with Africa (CAUMM), an international medical organisation, to facilitate provision of rehabilitation services to PWDs.
“Epileptic patients used to be regarded as useless and abandoned. But this has been demystified and they are given equal opportunity through programmes like these,” Andrionzi said.
District chairperson Esrom Alenyo hailed CAUMM for its support to the district health programmes and pledged continued cooperation.
CUAMM for supports the provision of physiotherapy, orthopedic appliances, occupational therapy and epilepsy care in seven northern Uganda districts.
It has already trained community-based rehabilitation workers in three pilot districts.
