THE Government has agreed to pay over sh232m to the Ankole crown prince, John Barigye (above), as balance for money paid on the 4,501.811 hectares of land he sold to the state, reports Hillary Kiirya.

Mike Okua of Kasirye, Byaruhanga and Company advocates, on Monday reported to Justice Okumu Wengi of the High Court that they had received an offer from the Government, accepting to pay the outstanding balance.

Barigye sued the state early this year claiming he sold land in Igara, Kashari, Bunyaruguru, Buhweju and Rwampara counties to the government at about sh2b but sh232.9m was still outstanding.

The Attorney General, had however, argued that the Government did not owe Barigye any money, because it paid sh1.8b for the land.

The Attorney General added that the plot was approximately 7,751 hectares of free-hold land valued at sh3.5b and only 4,502 hectares were sold to the Government.
Barigye asked court to order payment of the money with interest of 24% from 2001 until full payment was made.

The matter had come for hearing when Barigye’s lawyer reported government’s proposal to court.
