In the village in Africa, whenever an elder dies, a library dies.

These are the words of James Tumusiime, the Chairperson of the National Book Trust Association of Uganda at the official opening of the 12th national book week festivities last week.

Tumusiime said there was need to popularise the reading culture by inspiring the children.

The Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara, Solomon Gafabusa Iguru, who was chief guest urged stakeholders to document the rich African heritage for future reference.

“Our values and traditions can be passed on and read all over the world. They can be preserved forever,” Iguru said.

Hordes of pupils and teachers thronged the Children’s Reading Tent.

Good Hope Parents School of Kibaale district, Yana Primary School of Hoima and Noble Care Primary School of Kawempe participated in the reading demostration.

The children crowned the City Children’s Reading tent with entertainment. They sung and had poem recitals.

They were involved in different activities like painting, reading and moulding.
