Assimilation!

SIR— Is assimilation possible in the tribal Ugandan society?

SIR— Is assimilation possible in the tribal Ugandan society?
I assume that assimilation is when an individual or community adopts the language, culture and identity of another (dominant?) culture, and loses its own.

The issue was raised by the Katikiro of Bunyoro-Kitara at the recent the Empango celebrations. Of late, immigrants and refugees have flooded some parts of Bunyoro, making the Bunyoro culture threatened in those parts.

How do we assimilate the Nilotic and Sudanic speaking peoples in those parts? Will intermarriage help in the long run? What about the Bantu immigrants who won’t assimilate?

These issues need to be addressed urgently by all interested parties. We should learn
from history.
