NEW IBF light middleweight champion Kassim “The Dream” Ouma walked away with close to $ 40,000(sh 70m) for fighting American Verno Phillips at the Caesars Palace, in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night.

Ouma, 26, registered a unanimous points decision (114-113,114-113,117-110) over previous holder Phillips in a thrilling world title fight.
Despite the win, the Florida-based Ugandan challenger got less than the “champion”, who is always guaranteed a bigger purse. Phillips walked away with $ 135,000(sh 236m) but, Ouma will get the lion’s share next time he is challenged.

Ouma will earn over $1m but still less than Ronald “Winky” Wright if he challenges him for the WBC and WBA Super-welter titles.

The former child soldier becomes the fourth Ugandan pugilist to enter the illustrious class of world champions after Ayub Kalule, Boza Edwards and John “The Beast” Mugabi.

The prize fighter will be a keen observer when WBC and WBA Super welter champion Ronald “Winky” Wright makes his defence against Shane “Sugar” Mosley on November 20.

Ouma improved his record to 20-1-1(13 KOs)and put Uganda at the same level with South Africa, who have had a record four world champions before.

Kalule, Mugabi and now Ouma have reigned in the 154-pound division. Boza Edwards, was a WBC super featherweight champion.

South Africa’s greats are Dingaan Thobela, WBC super middleweight champion in 2000 and Thulane “Sugarboy” Malinga champion in 1996.

Others are Phillip “No Deal” Holiday an IBF lightweight champion in 1995 and Vuyani Bungu an IBF Super bantamweight in 1994.
