THE chairperson of the parliamentary committee on agriculture, John Odit (Erute South), has said farmers have petitioned Parliament and the agriculture ministry over the use of DDT in the country.

While discussing the Agricultural chemicals control bill on Wednesday, Odit said farmers, fish and flower exporters associations had asked Parliament to intervene in the use of DDT.
“The use of DDT has serious implications on agricultural products. We cannot let this go without our intervention since its use is becoming controversial in the agricultural sector,” Odit said.

He said the horticulture, floriculture and fisheries export industries had decried its use, saying the market for their products would be affected.
“We applaud the use of DDT to fight malaria. But our concern and that of the farmers is about the measures to ensure the safety of fish and agricultural products from its application,” Odit said.
